It’s marathon season around here. There are many marathons and races locally here even in the month of October. Chicago is happening this weekend and I have a good friend running one in the Fox Valley a week or 2 after. I have done 5 marathons myself with great memories and experiences. I am now just running for fun with an occasional 5 or 10K race.
My running pal and I ran into a friend on the path the other day. She is training for Chicago and was with her coach. My friend, who has done too many marathons to count, said she just couldn’t do them anymore.
Her reason was that she just couldn’t afford to be that tired anymore.
I reflected back to my first marathon in the early 2000s. That was just when I was learning about Shaklee. I didn’t know too much about the sports nutrition line so maybe took a vitamin or 2 but used nothing else. And was I tired….sure was. I remember I would come home from my long runs on Saturday morning and my husband would often go to work. I would shower and then find my way eventually to the couch out in the back porch. I remember many a times napping while the kids played outside on a nice Saturday. I needed those naps all the time. And the next day…I was SO sore. My muscles were sore. I remember even my ankles and feet hurt.
Enter Shaklee when I trained for my next marathon. I have learned that when using Shaklee products during my training, I feel so much better, my energy is better, my recovery is much quicker and I stay healthier.

5 Products that really helped me. What I won’t train without and why!
1. Vitalizer: Vitamin pac full of 80 bio-optimized nutrients. This is a smart supplement pac that covers all the bases from essential vitamins and minerals, B and C, Omega 3, 26 antioxidants and a probiotic. I take a strip each day. The women’s version contains iron which is essential for gals in their childbearing years as well as athletes
2. Performance: Electrolyte Hydration Drink: So much healthier than Gatorade and hydrates better than water…clinically proven to. When I trained drinking Gatorade, I found it sloshed around in my stomach and made me feel nauseous most days. When I am racing, I may start to feel nauseous. I have learned that it occurs because I am dehydrated. I sip on the Performance that I have brought with me on the race, and that queasy feeling goes away.
3. Physique: A recovery Shake: a great mixture of soy and whey protein that encourages muscle recovery and building of lean muscle. This yummy banana flavored drink it just ‘heaven’ for my aching muscles after a long run. Even more importantly, when I wake up in the morning I don’t feel as sore as I did before…when I just had coffee and a bagel to recover from a long run.
4. Joint health Complex: this is a reformulated version of what we used to have at Shaklee when I was training. But I am using this as well as my husband to help with our joint health. This contains Glucosamine plus that Boswellia extract that is in Pain relief complex you will read about later. The Glucosamine helps to rebuild the cartilage that you just might be damaging a bit with running so much as well as lubricating the joints to help with comfort. My husband has told me this is a lifesaver for his knees. He takes this regularly and has seen a big difference in the way his knees feel after a race or long run. And it’s been show to give results in as a little as 5 days.
5. Pain relief cream: when the muscles need a little love. This soothing joint and muscle pain relief cream works…and works within minutes. It provides temporary relief from minor joint and muscle pain in including arthritis as well as a sports injury or overuse from training etc. What I love about it is that it is not greasy, soaks in right away and deeply penetrates to the site so provide relief right away.
6. POST MARATHON: Pain relief complex. This supplement is natural relief for discomfort caused by overexertion…and of course running a marathon or even a half…is considered over exerting just a bit. This complex is a blend of Boswellia extract that helps with inflammation and joint comfort along with safflower extract that helps the joints. And best of all it’s all natural, easy on the stomach and non-habit forming.
7. Massage: go in for a 2-hour massage. May sounds extravagant but after running for 4+ hours straight, this is one of the best things. I set my massages up for 2-3 days after the run so that the muscle pain has subsided a bit.
8. And just an aside – recap your marathon. I am finished running marathons but I can remember them all. What I love to do is just a few days following the run when the memories and still pretty clear; I sit down and write a recap. Experiences, emotions, pains, people I saw along the way, and the finish line experience. Just all those memories from the race. I love to look back on those recaps, as they were good time.
I wouldn’t change a thing looking back on those marathons and races, as I learned a lot. I learned a lot about nutrition, healthy supplements and vitamins, and training, but I also learned a lot about myself and what’s inside of me.
