Even when we try to stay healthy, there are times when it isn’t good enough.
Sometimes we get sick.
That is what happened here.
One of my sons, who is a teenager, started with a sore throat after the holidays. It got so bad that he wanted to go see a doctor and get a strep test. We did that and found no fever and no strep, just tonsils that were very swollen and much phlegm in the throat. We were told to watch it and report back if things got worse. And they did. 2 days following the tonsils were more swollen and were impacting my son’s ability to sleep without gagging.
So into the local Urgent Care we went. There my son was examined and blood tests confirmed that my son had mono. As much as I was giving my son lots of Omega 3 and Vivix to help with the inflammation, he needed more. Thus the INSTY MEDS.
The medications helped to get the inflammation of those tonsils and helped so that he could sleep better for sure. We were supposed to travel to Minnesota for a hockey tournament this weekend but of course that did not happen. One of our hockey dad friends is able to LiveStream the games so this is how Tyler spend his weekend, watching the games over the IPAD
In the meantime of course the ‘Vitamin Lady’ mom takes over again to load my son up with wellness products to help him get better fast. The quicker we can boost his immune system, the sooner he will be back to school and on the ICE, which of course is what he’s most interested in.
I went onto explain to my son that when you are an athlete playing at his caliber, you are burning through your cells so much faster than someone who is not as active. Because of that you need to be smart about your health, supplementation and rest. In my marathon running days, there were many friends who found themselves during the tapering period a week before the race not feeling well and getting quite sick. The body is tired from the training and as you ‘rest’ with tapering it often crashes. We are at the end of the hockey season for my son so I think his body and immune system were taxed.
Here is what I had him start with after the diagnosis.
He wasn’t too thrilled with the green juice but the supplements go down easy.
Sustained Vitamin C: Shaklee’s vitamin C is unique that it has a sustained released formula. It releases the vitamin c over a 6-8 hour period of time. It’s like eating an orange and half each hour. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant to help support the immune system and helps to prevent free radical damage.
Nutriferon: this is a unique patented product only from Shaklee that helps your body to produce more of its own Interferon. The product comprises 4 plant extracts designed to naturally increase the immune support that our body needs. I love this product as a natural alternative to the flu shot and helps many get through the cold and flu season healthier. Here is a short video that will help you understand more about Nutriferon.
Optiflora: this is the good bacteria that your immune system needs. Did you know that more than 75% of our immune system is in our intestinal system? When we eat processed foods, take antibiotics, eat too much sugar or alcohol and are under stress, the intestinal flora gets disrupted. Taking a probiotic each day is a very good things for the general public. Tyler is taking one each day as well as he works to build his immune system up again.
Vivix: This powerful antioxidant helps to blunt oxidative stress and helps to get down to the cellular level and helps to repair DNA and more. It contains polyphenols from the muscadine grape and resveratrol, which in this combination is 10 times more effective than resveratrol alone. This is a great product for elite athletes as well as those who are concerned about aging.
Along with the supplements, rest and hydration having a little comfort food always helps.
I made a big pot of chicken chili for dinner one night this week. Yummy, and sure hits the spot when there is a chill in the air. I even invited a friend over to enjoy the savory dinner.
So my son is on the mend here and we hope that the mono does not return here.

Moyra, thanks for this great blog. My grandson was just diagnosed with mono. He’s starting summer classes at college, taking Chemistry, and too sick to go to class. Glad to have these suggestions to add to his Vitalizer!

What is the green juice?
It’s a recipe that I make often of Celery, apple, kale, romaine lettuce, lemon, a little ginger and cucumber. Do you juice?
